Meet Joanne, Centre Manager at Barnardos Early Learning Henderson

For Joanne Bywater, early childhood education has always been about more than care. It is about belonging, relationships and helping tamariki build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Joanne has led Barnardos Early Learning Henderson since 2013, bringing nearly three decades of experience in early childhood education. After beginning her career as a teacher aide, she completed her early childhood teaching qualification in 1996 and has since worked across early learning centres, kindergartens and teacher education.

That depth of experience is something whānau can feel when they walk through the doors. Joanne brings a calm, caring and thoughtful approach to leadership, believing that tamariki learn best when they feel safe, valued and connected.

"Tamariki cannot learn effectively until they have a sense of belonging. Positive relationships with tamariki and their whānau are crucial to supporting children to grow and develop."

Barnardos Early Learning Henderson is a diverse and welcoming centre, with strong connections to the local community, including He Wero Teen Parent Unit. Joanne describes the centre as warm, inviting and homely, a place where tamariki are encouraged to learn, explore and thrive.

For Joanne, the centre is also deeply personal. Not only does she lead the team, but her own grandchildren attend the centre, giving her a unique perspective as both an educator and a whānau member.

As a leader, Joanne values kindness, respect and genuine connection. She wants every family to feel welcomed, supported and confident that their tamariki are known, valued and cared for.

One of Joanne's favourite moments is seeing tamariki graduate from the centre, excited and ready for school, with proud whānau celebrating alongside them.

For families considering Barnardos Early Learning Henderson, Joanne's leadership offers something deeply reassuring: experience, warmth and a genuine commitment to helping every child feel they belong.
