Recently Tonga was hit with devastation following the recent volcanic eruption with many communities suffering as a result. The impact of this event affected Oamaru’s Tongan community. Centre parents worked hard to mobilise funds to support their families affected back home in Tonga.

In the spirit of community support, the Oamaru Early Learning Centre children dressed in red and white or anything that represented the kingdom of Tonga and families donated towards assisting our Pacific neighbours.

“Dressing in red and white and asking for a donation showed our support. We also played some games that represented Tonga” said Janine Presnall Centre Manager. 

The funds were gratefully received by the president of the Waitaki Tongan Community Trust - Oamaru, Lavai Veituna.
